Social Security posted its plan today for dealing with a government shutdown should the budget situation not be resolved by next Tuesday, Oct. 1. Based on history, the likelihood of a shutdown is remote. This year, however, it is certainly a distinct possibility, as we rapidly approach the start of a new fiscal year and the parties appear far from resolving their differences.
Here is a quick summary of the impact:
SSA would furlough 18,006 (28.9 percent) of its 62,343 employees. Specifically, the components most impacted would be:
ODAR’s (Level 3 hearing sites) 8,608 furloughs
Systems – CIO (IT support, infrastructure) 2,877 furloughs
Operations (Field Offices, PC’s, TSC’s) 2,569 furloughs
Quality Performance (DDS support) 1,084 furloughs
Disability Determination Services (DDS) employees are not included in the furlough numbers since those are state government employees and not under the direct authority of the federal agency.
